Rye Wildlife and History

A family-friendly walk from the railway station, across sheep fields to Henry VIII's Camber Castle; watch wildlife from the bird hide and stroll back alongside the wetlands for more wildlife-watching opportunities.

Time & Location

13 Sept 2025, 14:00 – 16:30

Rye Rail Station, Rye TN31 7AB, UK

About the event

Hop on a train or bus to Rye Station and join us for a walk across the grazing marshland to see what wildlife we can spot. We'll head out to Camber Castle, where we can peek through the windows (sadly, no entry) and learn why this fortification is so far from the sea. After that, we'll visit the wildlife watching hide overlooking Castle Water, where there should be plenty of birds to see. We'll then stroll alongside the reed beds and follow the tracks of an old railway line back to Rye Station.

This walk is suitable for children who can manage the 3 mile walk over uneven ground (not suitable for buggies); children must be accompanied by an adult with parental responsibility.

Walk distance: 3 miles

Walk duration: 2.5 hours

Obstacles: uneven terrain, and unsurfaced paths

Meet-up point: outside Rye railway station, station approach, TN31 7AB
